Lansing Catholic graduate Cooper Rush is one of eight quarterbacks in the running for the Manning Award Star of the Week.
Rush helped Central Michigan to a 51-14 victory over Buffalo on Saturday, completing 22 of 30 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Rush also ran for a score.
Voting for the Manning Award can be done at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page and is open until noon Thursday.
Rush has thrown for 2,084 yards and 16 touchdowns and six interceptions in seven games for the Chippewas, who are 3-4 and 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
WESTERN MICHIGAN: Senior forward Esteban Russell (DeWitt) has been a contributor for a Bronco soccer team that is 7-3-2 start. He has appeared in all 13 games this season and has a goal and two assists. Russell scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to Michigan State last week.
MICHIGAN STATE: Kristelle Yewah (Okemos) has been among the top scorers for the 7-4-4 Spartan women’s soccer team this season. Yewah is tied for third on the team with five points, and has tallied a goal and three assists. Erica Goodenough (DeWitt) has also appeared in every game and has two goals for MSU.
Reigning Mr. Soccer DeJuan Jones (East Lansing) has made three starts this fall for the Spartan men’s soccer team and has a goal.
MICHIGAN: Aaron Baumgarten (Williamston) helped the No. 8-ranked Wolverine men’s cross country team finish third at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational. Baumgarten finished 63rd overall with a time of 24:15.12.
OAKLAND: Elle Nichols (Okemos) helped the Grizzlies women’s golf team win their own invitational last month. She tied for second individually with a score of 150 to help Oakland to its first invitational win since 2012.
OLIVET COLLEGE: Kyle Bryson (Leslie) had two touchdown catches in the final 1:49 Saturday and also hauled in a 2-point conversion to help the Comet football team to a 31-27 win over Hope. He finished the contest with four catches for 40 yards and three TDs.
ALMA COLLEGE: Zac Peterson (Holt), Cameron Lee (Waverly), Derek Ellis (Laingsburg) and Justin Thelen (Pewamo-Westphalia) were contributors on defense in the Scots’ 36-27 win over Kalamazoo on Saturday. Thelen had his fourth interception of the season, Peterson had 10 tackles and Lee registered a career-high seven tackles. Ellis had a career-high 1.5 sacks.
KALAMAZOO COLLEGE: Elijah Hamilton-Wray (East Lansing) had a kickoff return 83 yards for a score in the Hornets’ 36-27 loss to Alma on Saturday. Hamilton-Wray is averaging 28.1 yards on kickoff returns this fall for Kalamazoo, which is 2-4. He also has 12 catches for 165 yards and three touchdowns.
