NEPTUNE – There is one player in the Shore Conference no goalie wants to see coming on a breakaway.
And that is Colts Neck junior Frankie Tagliaferri, who is one of the fastest girls, not only in the Shore Conference, but also in the state.
With just under two minutes left in the first half, Tagliaferri was on the move following a restart.
She fired a shot that was deflected by Freehold Township’s Kaela Chadzuitko but the rebound went back to Tagliaferri and she deposited a hard shot to the lower right corner for the go-ahead goal with 1:59 left in the first half.
That goal eventually turned into the game-winning shot as No. 1 seed Colts Neck outlasted No. 2 seed Freehold Township, 1-0, in the Shore Conference Tournament Final on Saturday night at the Summerfield Elementary School in Neptune.
“It is absolutely unreal. I have no words to describe this feeling,” Colts Neck senior Bridgette King said. “I think last year (losing in the SCT final) was probably the best thing for us because it gave us more motivation to come here and put it all on the line and get that win.”
Colts Neck, the No. 1 ranked team in the Shore Conference, went wire-to-wire in the Asbury Park Press top 10 and completed the Shore Conference Tournament, not only with the school’s first girls soccer SCT title but also with an undefeated 18-0-1 record.
“It is definitely hard to do (go undefeated while winning a title) but we’ve been working since the first day of the preseason to specifically come here and get this done,” King said. “And it is just an unreal feeling that we’ve pulled it off.”
That Tagliaferri goal, her 23rd of the season, gave the Cougars the momentum going into halftime but by no means was Freehold Township (15-4-1) surrendering the title at that moment.
“The game was not over and we’ve been down before. We’ve played against good teams before and we just had to regroup,” Freehold Township coach Dave Patterson said. “We played a little bit defensively in the first half knowing that Colts Neck is a talented offensive team and that is something we obviously talked about pregame. Colts Neck is a really strong team and congratulations to them. But we hung with them and it didn’t go our way today.”
Colts Neck’s Lauren Feaster made five saves and Freehold Township’s Kaela Chadzuitko made 10 saves.
Last season, Colts Neck lost 1-0 to Wall in the SCT final. And a year later, the fastest player in the Shore Conference had the defining moment that secured the school’s first girls soccer SCT title.
“I knew they (Freehold Township) were going to push us like Wall did at the end of the SCT semifinals. Thank god. It was good that we were tested this season,” Phillips said. “We had some complacency, we had a lot of easy wins and Toms River South really tested us (in the SCT quarterfinals) and Wall really tested us (in the SCT semifinals). We were ready for tonight.”
And ready to hoist the SCT Final plaque high in the air.
