We are starting a new tradition at the Register. And it’s not an easy challenge.
That is, pick the eight best Iowa high school athletes in our key boys’ and girls’ sports. It’s not a list of the best seniors or just a reminder of the most productive from the previous season. We want to identify the eight best in that sport for the upcoming season. That’s tricky: It means taking into account past production and weighing that against future projection. This is meant to be an exclusive list, with everyone from incoming freshmen to seniors in that sport eligible to be included.
This preseason list is called the “Iowa Eight.”
Starting Friday at DesMoinesRegister.com, we’ll begin revealing our first group of athletes with our Iowa Eight wrestling list. Once a day, we’ll reveal a new Iowa Eight wrestling member before publishing extensive digital and print content on the entire team on July 26.
A lot of thought and consideration will go into the selection of these teams. The Register is weighing our staff’s observations of the athletes and the opinions of valued contacts in high school and college sports to compose the list of the Iowa Eight.
That said, we know a lot of tremendous athletes will miss making the Iowa Eight cut. Many who miss this list will go on to accomplish tremendous athletic achievements. In hindsight, we’ll miss on some. That’s fine. We encourage that debate.
Like we said, this is not an easy task.
