Richmond boys golf coach Ron Murphy has called this season a rebuilding year various times for the Red Devils.
Even then, New Castle coach Cliff Irvin said, it’s always nice to get a victory over a team known for making runs in the state tournament.
The Trojans conquered the Red Devils’ home course Wednesday, defeating Richmond 176-196 at Forest Hills Country Club, as both teams prepare for their respective conference tournaments coming up on Saturday.
Richmond travels to Coyote Crossings Golf Course in Lafayette Saturday for the North Central Conference tournament, while New Castle, a former NCC member, plays at the Muncie Elks for the Hoosier Heritage Conference tournament.
“I think it’s a down year for them, but we always like to win against Richmond; they’re usually one of the best in the state,” New Castle coach Cliff Irvin said Wednesday.
And it’s always good to shoot a solid round at Forest Hills, site of the Richmond sectional this year and one of the tougher courses in the area.
Trojan Kole Schofield was medalist with his 40, while Trevor Turner added a 43, Blake Wheeler a 45 and Drew Saunders and Spencer King both had 48’s.
“That (40) was from a player struggling real bad coming into this, so we’re glad he figured it out and got a 40,” Irvin said.
“It’s a rough course, course is tough, greens aren’t what they’re used to, if you get out of the fairway you’re in trouble, you’ve got to figure out how to get back.”
For Richmond, Jarrett Focht and Evan Williams shot 45’s, while Max Kuhnt shot 51 and Hunter Haskett and Greg Lyons shot 55’s.
Focht was all-NCC last season before the conference expanded to 10 teams this year, adding Lafayette Jeff, Harrison and McCutcheon.
“Jarrett Focht was All-NCC last year, this year we’re hoping Evan and Jarrett can both be all-conference,” Murphy said. “First year it’s been up there (at Coyote Crossings) … McCutcheon is the favorite, they’re ranked, … Muncie Central’s No. 1 is really good, that will be interesting to see who comes out on top.”
