Corning High School junior Reid Cagir is among the top-12 seeds in two events for this weekend’s New York State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca College.
The meet starts at noon Friday with swimming preliminaries, followed at 3:30 p.m. by the full diving competition. Swimming finals begin at noon Saturday. Tickets are $8 and are available at nysphsaa.ticketleap.com.
Cagir is seeded ninth in the 50-yard freestyle with a top time of 21.42 seconds this season. He is also the No. 12 seed in the 100 freestyle (47.25). He won the Section 4 Class A title in the 100 freestyle on Feb. 14 at Owego Free Academy and placed second in the 50 freestyle.
Last year Cagir was 40th-fastest in the 100 freestyle at the state prelims with a time of 49.06. He was also part of the Hawks’ 200 freestyle relay that placed 17th.
The top 10 swimmers in each event Friday advance to the championship finals. Qualifiers 11-20 advance to consolation finals, with swimmers 21-30 moving to bonus finals.
Horseheads will be represented in three events, with junior Kenyon Winkky swimming in each. Winkky is seeded 17th in the 100 backstroke (53.0) and is part of the Blue Raiders’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. He won the Section 4 Class A title in the backstroke.
The Blue Raiders’ 200 medley relay is seeded 28th (1:40.21) and also includes Zane Elsisi, Shoonhsin Li, Antonio Villegas and Alex Johnson. Winkky, Elsisi, Li and Villegas teamed to win the Section 4 Class A title.
Horseheads’ 400 freestyle relay is the No. 32 seed and also includes Villegas, Kaelan Winkky, Elsisi and Johnson.
Waverly junior Josh Mastrantuono is seeded 23rd in the 100 breaststroke (59.98) and 31st in the 50 freestyle (22.01).
Watkins Glen junior Matt Doppel is seeded 22nd in the 100 backstroke (53.69).
