Tempe Corona del Sol baseball players and coaches are stepping up to the plate Saturday for ailing senior boys volleyball player Ridge Vanderbur.
They’re going to have their heads shaved to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Network in honor of Vanderbur, who is battling acute myeloid leukemia.
The libero, who was a big part of last season’s team, has been a patient at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for almost seven months.
“Ridge has been bravely fighting cancer over the last school year and we want to honor him for the warrior that he is,” Corona del Sol baseball coach Dave Webb said in a release sent out by the Tempe Union High School District.
The team is trying to raise $7,000. It also is hosting a barbecue and alumni game starting at 10 a.m.
The head shaving will start at noon.
