JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the first time in 18 years Ricky Medlock is entering high school football season not as a Fletcher assistant, but as their head coach.

The long-time assistant took over the Senators in January after Josh Corey, who had coached at Fletcher for the past four seasons, took a job in the National Football League with the Tennessee Titans as the team’s Youth Football Coordinator. For Medlock, 2015 will be his first head coaching job since he literally built the Mandarin football program from the ground up, beginning in 1990.

Fast-forward 25 years later and Medlock once again is being called upon to build, or in the case, reload a football team. Fletcher only returns five starters from 2014’s roster, one that finished 7-5 – their lowest win total since 2006 – but reached the regional finals (eventually losing to Oakleaf) in 2014.

In all the Senators lost 22 seniors to graduation, the biggest without question being wide receiver Kalif Jackson who is in Gainesville now in the middle of fall camp with the Florida Gators.

Medlock will look to two of those five returning starters, senior quarterback Alec Adamec and senior receiver Crisjohn Roscoe, to help fill the offensive void left by Jackson’s departure.

In addition, while many did not start last season, more than half of the Senators’ roster are returning juniors and seniors who did see playing time in 2014.

If Medlock hopes to get Fletcher back to winning double-digit games, he’ll need a few of those returners stepping into starting roles to raise their level of play, in addition to having Adamec and Roscoe take the next step.

The Senators take the field for the first time in 2015, August 20, when they host Ed White in the preseason Kickoff Classic at 6 p.m.. They open the regular season with another 6 p.m. kickoff, August 28, this time on the road at Sandalwood.
