Shelden Barina hasn’t played many rounds of golf at Stones River Country Club.

But the Stewarts Creek sophomore looked right at home Monday afternoon at the Stones River High School Invitational.

Barina shot a three-over 74 to edge the Oakland duo of Tate Chumley and Adam Dyke by a stroke and claim medalist honors.

“It was beautiful,” Barina said of his round. “I drove the ball really well, and made a few putts.”

Stewarts Creek won the invitational, which featured only Rutherford County teams, with a 332. Blackman finished second with a 335, but was without its top golfer, Tanner Owens. The Virginia Tech commitment is participating in the Tennessee Amateur Championship this week in Knoxville.

Stewarts Creek, which won last year’s Region 4-AAA tournament in just its second year, finished eighth in the TSSAA Class AAA state tournament

“I was a little worried about the beginning of our season,” Stewarts Creek coach Holly Pace said. “We lost two of our players. We lost one (Trae Balmer) to Smyrna, and another decided not to come out.

“So we have kind of a newer team — some younger kids on it. I’m really excited that this is how it turned out.”

And Barina’s score helped out. Stewarts Creek’s other three scores were in the 80s.

Siegel was third with a 338, Oakland was fourth with a 339 and Central Magnet was fifth with a 347.

Riverdale senior Reagan Kinnie ran away with medalist honors on the girls side, firing a 74. Last year’s District 7-AAA individual champion won by 16 strokes over Oakland’s Jessie Eaton.

Kinnie’s round helped the Lady Warriors win the girls tournament with a 172. Oakland was second with a 185.

Central Magnet was third with a 202, Stewarts Creek was fourth with a 204 and Eagleville was fifth with a 219.

While several golfers struggled on what was described as fast greens, Kinnie said she didn’t think they were that quick:

“I was three-putting everywhere, but it was getting over like two-footers and three-footers and choking.”

Kinnie said she made a couple of technique changes to her swing a couple of weeks ago and is still getting used to the changes.

“I’m just trying to remember that these tournaments aren’t what matter,” she said. “It’s state and stuff like that. I’m just building up and getting ready for then.”
