For the second year in a row, Steven Cross of Merritt Island will run Saturday in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship at Balboa Park in San Diego.
Cross placed 10th on Nov. 28 at the Foot Locker South Regional in Charlotte, N.C. He ran 15:24 over 5,000 meters at McAlpine Creek Park to become Florida’s only qualifier.
Cross, a senior who recently signed to attend and compete for Florida State, is the first boy from Brevard to qualify for the race twice. Another two-time qualifier, Drew Hunter of Purcellville, Va., won Saturday’s regional event, running a course record of 14:26.
Cross won the FHSAA’s Class 3A title on Nov. 7 in Tallahassee. He finished second as a junior.
War Eagles junior invited to combine
Astronaut High junior quarterback Brad Canarie has been invited to the U.S. Army National Combine at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Jan. 7-9. Six hundred underclassmen from around the country were chosen to attend.
Canarie passed for 454 yards during the past season. The combine, which includes physical testing along with seminars for the invitees, is affiliated with the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Panthers senior signs with North Carolina school
Joseph Nelms of Heritage signed recently with Brevard (N.C.) College of the Division II South Atlantic Conference. He will play baseball and study pre-med there.
