Running back Jake Funk set a Maryland state title game record with seven touchdowns as Damascus downed Dundalk (Baltimore), 55-14, in the 3A title game Thursday.
Funk, a Maryland commit, entered with a state-record 50 touchdowns on the season.
He scored six times in the first half Thursday and was pulled from the game after three quarters with 265 yards rushing. His first-half TDs came on runs of 1, 4, 33, 6 and 7 yards and a 9-yard reception. He added his final TD on a 39-yard run in the third quarter.
His performance came on the heels of his being named Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year.
In setting the 3A state title game record for points, Damascus (14-0) won its first state title since 2007 and set the state record for points in a season with 669. The previous record was held by Hereford, which scored 637 in 2004.
Damascus won its eighth state title in school history.
Dundalk (13-1) had been allowing an average of 12.7 points per game, but Damascus eclipsed that total early in the first quarter.
