Deer Park enters the 2015 season with a familiar feeling. It has been a while since the football team celebrated a victory.
Last year was yet another 1-9 campaign capped by an eight-game losing streak to end the season. The Wildcats once again went winless in Cincinnati Hills League play. This year’s seniors are eager to break both of those streaks.
Seniors John Pearson (TE/DE), Martell Johnson (RB), and Tanner Hicks (LB) are leading the efforts to turn the program around. They put in the work in offseason necessary to be more successful on Friday nights this Fall.
“They have emerged as the men to handle this team. Their leadership during our summer workouts has been tremendous,” said head coach Larry Kozlowski. “They are the oldest and need to be mature enough to lead by example on and off the field.”
Junior Jordan Yelling takes the reins at quarterback and may need to scramble behind an offensive line with four new starters. The good news for the Wildcats is that the line is bigger and stronger than in years past and the team has more overall depth.
“Our strength is our athleticism and senior leadership in vital positions,” said Kozlowski.
The goals for this season are simple. Two total wins and one CHL victory would make this the best Deer Park football season in years. The seniors have shown the commitment, now they just need to show some consistency on Friday nights.
“Bottom line, this year will be successful if we win,” said Kozlowski. “It’s been awhile since we have won and been consistent on and off the field. The seniors have committed themselves to doing just that. They will find out that good things happen when you do that.”
