Senior right-hander Blake Demeter was almost unhittable on Monday.
The Ocean senior right-hander struck out a career-high 17 and fired a complete-game two-hitter to lead the No. 8 seed Spartans to a 4-0 win over Jackson Liberty in a NJSIAA Central Group III first-round game. The strikeouts are believed to be a school-record for a single game, according to Ocean coach Cip Apicelli.
Ocean (17-9) will play at No. 1 seed Northern Burlington in a Central Group III quarterfinal.
Demeter (6-4) struck out the side in the second, fourth and seventh innings and two in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings. He threw 103 pitches.
Brian Olesen had a run-scoring ground out in the first and an RBI single in the fourth. Anthony Bartlomei had a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Frank Henry an RBI double in the sixth.

Midd. South 5, Midd. North 4: Johnny Zega’s two-out single to left in the bottom of the 11th scored Jeff Lewandowski and gave the No. 4 seed Eagles (20-7) the win over the No. 13 seed Lions (7-16) in a Central Group III first-round game.
Zega pitched four innings of scoreless relief to improve to 4-0. He was also 2-for-5.
Lewandowski walked with one out in the 11th and Nolan Pereless, who was 3-for-6 with two RBI had an infield single to set up Zega’s heroics.
Middletown South will host No. 12 Hightstown Thursday in a Central Group III quarterfinal
Freehold 4, Monroe 1: Senior right-hander Dante Cuzzolino pitched a complete-game two-hitter, struck out seven, walked two and hit two and Tom Holdorf capped a three-run top of the seventh with a two-run home run as the No. 14 seed Colonials (15-12) defeated the No. 3 seed Falcons (16-8) in a Central Group IV first-round game.
Marco Meleo had an RBI single in the second and Dominic Matteo a run-scoring safety squeeze bunt in the seventh for Freehold
Freehold will play at No. 6 seed and Shore Conference Class A North rival Manalapan (18-8) in a Central Group IV quarterfinal. The teams split their two regular season meetings,
Matawan 4, A.L. Johnson 2: The No. 14 seed Huskies (10-12) broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Joe Piscopo and an RBI double by Matt Espositio, Adam Elliott pitched six innings of two-run ball to improve to 4-1 and also hit a solo homer in the fourth and Nick Smith pitched the seventh to pick up the save as Matawan defeated the No. 3 seed Crusaders (12-10) in a Central Group II first-round game.
Kyle Chapman, who singled to start the seventh and had three hits, had an RBI double in the fourth.
Matawan will play at No. 6 seed Manasquan (12-9) Thursday in a Central Group II quarterfinal.
Jackson Memorial 3, Brick Memorial 2: Nick Rocco’s two-out, two-strike single in the bottom of the sixth scored Chris Hawryluk with the tie-breaking run and Ryan Takacs threw a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts to improve to 5-0 as the No. 4 seed and defending Group IV state champion Jaguars (19-5) defeated the No. 13 seed Mustangs (12-14) in a Central Group IV first-round game.
A single by Kyle Lona in the bottom of the fifth scored John Carello with the tying run and Brandon Janofsky’s sacrifice fly in the first scored Kyle Johnson.
Jackson Memorial will host No. 5 seed Hillsborough Thursday in a Central Group IV quarterfinal.
TR North 3, Shawnee 2: Ryan Larsen’s suicide squeeze bunt with one out in the bottom of the eighth scored Joey Rose with the winning run as the No. 2 seed Mariners (16-5) defeated the No. 15 seed Renegades in a South Group IV first-round game.
Rose singled to lead off the eighth. He moved to second on Mike Tiplady’s sacrifice bunt and to third on the same play when he saw third base was uncovered.
Doug Molnar did not allow an earned run and struck out four and walked one and allowed four hits in a complete-game performance to improve to 5-1.
Toms River North will host No. 10 seed Egg Harbor Township in a South Group IV quarterfinal .
Manasquan 13, Monmouth 3: Tanner Cowley went 3-for-3 with five RBI, including a two-run homer in a five-run third and a two-run single in a five-run fourth, Jack Sheehan belted a solo homer in the third and Ty Hawkins added a three-run homer in the fourth as the Warriors defeated the No. 11 seed Falcons (9-13) in a Central Group II first-round game.
Matt Edwards was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and scored three runs. Tyler Bradley also scored three runs and went 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI. Max Hawkins was 2-for-3 and scored two runs
TR South 8, Oakcrest 4: Ray Liguori had an RBI double, Ben Montenegro a sacrifice fly and sophomore pinch-runner Dylan Danelson scored on a first-and-third double steal in a three-run bottom of the fourth that wiped out a 4-3 deficit and senior Anthony Carfora threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win as the No. 3 seed Indians (18-7) defeated the No. 14 seed Falcons (8-13) in a South Group III first-round game.
Liguori went 2-for-3 with two RBI. He also had an opposite field RBI triple in the second, Jake Ryan was 3-fior-3 and scored two runs and Ryan Shiffer had an RBI single in the fifth and scored on a busted squeeze play.
Toms River South will host No. 6 seed Triton in a South Group III quarterfinal.
Manalapan 6, Montgomery 2: Nick Serra pitched a complete-game five-hitter to improve to 4-0 and Matt Klepper and Mike Mollica had RBI singles and Matt Rosenberg a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk in a five-run fourth and Jake Sadowitz had a solo homer to right in the second as the Braves defeated the No. 11 seed Cougars (12-10) in a Central Group IV first-round game.
Marlboro 5, East Brunswick 1: Jeremy Gerringer had a three-run double in the third, Andrew Nardi improved to 7-1 by scattering seven hits, striking out five and walking four and Mike Santaromita went 2-for-3 and scored two runs as the No. 7 seed Mustangs (12-9) defeated the No. 10 seed Bears in a Central Group IV first-round game
Marlboro will play at No. 2 seed Hunterdon Central in a Central Group IV quarterfinal.
Barnegat 4, Overbrook 1: Jared Kacso and Ed Rogan had RBI singles and Max Ritner a run-scoring safety squeeze bunt in a four-run fourth and John Corbett (five innings) and Tyler Hubley (two innings combined to throw a two-hitter as the No. 5 seed Bengals (15-10) defeated the No. 12 seed Rams in a South Group II first-round game.
Barnegat will play at No. 4 seed Glassboro in a South Group II quarterfinal.
Shore 10, Highland Park 0: Dylan McLaughlin pitched four innings of two-hit ball with seven strikeouts and no walks and went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, Dhillon Barbetti went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored a run and Sam Parrino was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and scored two runs as the No. 6 seed and defending Group I state champion Blue Devils (15-9) defeated the Owls in a Central Group I first-round game.
Shore will host No. 14 seed Bound Brook Thursday in a Central Group I quarterfinal.
West Windsor-Plainsboro South 1, Colts Neck 0: Sean O’Brien pitched a complete-game three-hitter and struck out five and walked three and Rob Armus’ two-out RBI single in the top of the second accounted for the game’s only run as the No. 16 seed Pirates defeated the No. 1 seed Cougars (21-3) in a Central Group IV first-round game.
Colts Neck only got one runner to second base. That came in the seventh on a two-out walk and stolen base.
Cougars’ pitcher Mike D’Ottavio pitched six innings of five-hit ball. He struck out three and walked four.
Allentown 8, Wall 6: Senior catcher Dan Wondrack set the school-record for homers in a season with nine with a three-run shot in the first, collected his 100th career and went 2-for-4 with four RBI, but it was not enough for the No. 6 seed Crimson Knights (20-6) in their loss to the No. 11 seed Redbirds in a Central Group III first-round game.
Allentown wiped out a 5-0 deficit with three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth.
