Valentine's Day: Elite hoopers dish on which game they love most from this season

Valentine's Graphic

For Elijah Thomas it was a nationally televised matchup against a top five team, for Antonio Blakeney it was when he saved the day on a tip-dunk for the ages and for Jayson Tatum it was a big matchup against McDonald’s All American point guard Jalen Brunson.

“People love Valentine’s Day,” said Harry Giles III. “But we love playing this game!”

How much?

We caught up with elite players from around the country and had them dish on which game from the current season they love the most in observance of Valentine’s Day.

Harry Giles III, Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.), F, 2016

College: Undecided

The game I love the most so far this season is… “Probably my second game of the season against Northside Christian when I had 40 points and 20 rebounds. That was a fun game and I was loving that one. That one or the High Point Christian game when I had 29 points and 12 rebounds. That was a fun game; definitely loved that one too.”

Dennis Smith Jr., Trinity Christian School (Fayetteville, N.C.), PG, 2016

College: Undecided

The game I love the most so far this season is… “The game against Thon Maker’s team at the High School OT. That was probably my best one this season; I had 38 points and the thing I didn’t love about it was that we lost, but everybody on the team was going hard and we really left everything out on the court in that one. I think that had a lot to do with us changing our mindset for the second half of the season.”

Ben Simmons, Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.), F, 2015

College: LSU

The game I love the most so far this season is… “The game against Saint Francis; they had Malik Beasley and Kobi Simmons. It was at the City of Palms and that was the game where I threw the ball off the backboard to myself and dunked it on the guy. It wasn’t just that though; it was the way the whole game went. We were just out there having fun hooping!”

Elijah Thomas, Lancaster (Lancaster, Texas), F, 2015

College: Texas A&M

The game I love the most so far this season is… “The Plano West game because it was on national television and playing against my brothers and college teammates was fun. My stats were 15 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocks.”

Austin Grandstaff, Rockwall (Rockwall, Texas), SG, 2015

College: Ohio State

The game I love the most so far this season is… “When we played Rowlett the first time because they’re our cross-town rivals so it was a hyped game. I had 53 points and we won so that’s my favorite game for sure!”

Jayson Tatum, Chaminade College Prep (St. Louis, Mo.), SF, 2016

College: Undecided

The game I love the most so far this season is… “When we played Jalen Brunson’s team, they were nationally ranked in the top 10 and we won by seven. I had 39 points and 14 rebounds and I love it because I was like 15 of 20. I was on fire and it was fun ‘cause Jalen was getting buckets too; we were going back and forth. Or it was the game when we played Cardinal Ritter and won by five in overtime; I had 45 points and 12 rebounds. Loved that one ‘cause it was a career-high.”

Antonio Blakeney, Oak Ridge (Orlando, Fla.), SG, 2015

College: LSU

The game I love the most so far this season is… “My recent game against Evans High School. It’s a rivalry game and the gym was standing room only. I ended the game with 35 points, eight rebounds and six assists and had the game winning tip-dunk to win it!”
