DeSoto promotes Todd Peterman as football coach

By

DeSoto’s Todd Peterman took over a nationally prominent football program with a coaching pedigree which goes back to a small Oklahoma town, includes a dash of Spike Dykes and heavily sprinkled with Claude Mathis over the last seven years.

Peterman was elevated from offensive coordinator in a unanimous school board vote, which met for more than an hour in executive session, including 20 minutes with Peterman. Mathis left DeSoto in January to join the staff of Chad Morris at SMU. Peterman has been part of Mathis’ staff since 2008 and a key figure in going 74-18 in seven seasons with back-to-back 5A semifinals appearances in 2012 and 2013. DeSot was 10-2 this past season, losing to eventual champ Allen in a 25-22 thriller at AT&T Stadium.

“If you are loyal to DeSoto, DeSoto will be loyal to you,” said school board president Warren Seay Jr. The school board cited the academic success of former DeSoto players in college as a major factor in creating confidence to keep DeSoto’s staff largely in place with the hiring of Peterman. The school board room was packed with coaches, families and current and former players and burst into applause on the 8-0 vote.

“We are a very close staff,” Peterman said. “Incredibly so”

He’ll take over for Claude Mathis, who had a record of 74-18 in seven seasons at

a longtime math teacher, Peterman has been coaching 22 years at Denison, John Tyler, Terrell and Midland. A quarterback/defensive back and pole vaulter at Rush Springs in Oklahoma., Peterman played football at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

In addition to Mathis, Peterman said he’d been influenced by coaches since the seventh grade, and, particulalry, by former Midland coach David Browning, once an offensive line coach for inconic Texas high school and college coach Spike Dykes.
