CHEKHOV, Russia — After 24 hours of travel, Destiny Slocum joined the USA women’s U19 national basketball team just hours before the start of the the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championships in Russia.

Slocum, who replaced the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year Katie Lou Samuleson, played 15 minutes, had two points on four shots in USA’s 72-57 victory over Spain to open the tournament.

“It was worth the 24 hours of travel, I can tell you that,” Slocum told USA Basketball. “You wait 17 years for something and then it happens. I think it just felt awesome.”

The United States (1-0) will face China (1-0) Sunday at 11:15 a.m. MT. Watch the game live.
