Dale Harvel of Detroit King is the first recipient of the Detroit Lions/Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan 2015 High School Coach of the Week award.
This is Harvel’s 33rd year in coaching, 30th at King and seventh as King’s head coach. After defeating defending Division 2 state champ Warren De La Salle, 12-10, in the opener, Harvel’s career record is 52-24, and his Crusaders are ranked No. 1 in Division 2.
This is the 19th year of the coach-of-the-week program, which has distributed $345,000 to high school football programs throughout Michigan.
Each of the nine weekly winners will receive $2,000 for their program, and the coach of the year will receive $4,000. Personalized Lions game balls and certificates from Lions coach Jim Caldwell and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will be presented at a Lions game later this season.
On the selection committee are Hugh Bernreuter of MLive/Saginaw, Bret Bakita of WOOD Radio in Grand Rapids, James Cook of the Traverse City Record Eagle, Scott Brandenburg of MLive/Muskegon and the Free Press’ Mick McCabe.
