Richmond is chasing a fifth consecutive sectional championship in girls tennis.
But first, the Red Devils wait.
Richmond drew one of two byes as pairings for this week’s sectional tournament on the Tiernan Center courts were announced Monday.
Play begins 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Centerville meets Lincoln and Northeastern drew Seton Catholic in the opening round.
Hagerstown has the other bye. The Tigers will face the Centerville-Lincoln winner in a Thursday semifinal., while Richmond awaits either Northeastern or Seton.
“I like to get that extra day of practice in, but you also like to play the matches,” said RHS coach Randy Hollingsworth. “I don’t think there is an advantage or a disadvantage either way.”
The championship is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday. The winner advances to next week’s regional, also on the Tiernan Center courts.
Richmond won last year’s tournament by defeating Centerville 5-0 in the final. The Red Devils went on to win the regional and advance to semistate for the first time since 2008.
“It’s a pretty good field,” Hollingsworth said of this year’s prospective opponents. “It’s probably one of the more even sectionals that we’ve had in a long time. I think there are several teams that could win it.”
Centerville currently leads the Tri-Eastern Conference tournament with 30 points to 27 for Hagerstown, 22 for Lincoln and 19 for Northeastern. The tournament will be completed today after delays for weather.
The Red Devils go into tournament play on a six-match winning streak. They finished the regular season 10-2.
“I think our strength of schedule helps us somewhat,” Hollingsworth said. “We have played some pretty good teams. The fact that we’re coming into the sectional playing some of our better tennis helps us a lot.”
