DICK'S Sports Matter campaign comes through to save Alaska girls hockey program

By

In late July, USA TODAY High School Sports brought you news of DICK’S Sporting Goods and DonorsChoose.org’s partnership to save youth sports, one donation at a time. Now we’re starting to see just how impactful those efforts can be.

As part of the company’s Sports Matter campaign, DICK’S provided a $200,000 donation to keep the Anchorage Girls Hockey League afloat; the donation was needed due to severe cutbacks in public funding that had previously meant the 2015-16 season would be the league’s last.

In typical theatrical fashion, DICK’S made the announcement in the form of a surprise appearance at the league’s kick off event at Ben Boeke Arena. Instead of a celebration honoring the league’s final campaign, the teens were given the chance to celebrate a brighter future.

This isn’t the first time that a significant donation from a group or celebrity has saved the Anchorage Girls Hockey program; in 2013 Scott Gomez, the NHL star, made a sizable contribution that kept the league running for three years. Now it’s DICK’S turn to come through, and thanks to the Sports Matter campaign, girls in Anchorage still have plenty to play for, all through the winter.
