YORKTOWN HEIGHTS – It seemed as if nothing could stop Yorktown’s Casey Duff.
The junior opened the scoring 51 seconds in, and completed her hat trick within six minutes. The only thing that slowed her down: a bloody cut on her leg during the second half that forced her to be subbed out. She finished with six goals to lead the Huskers to a 16-7 win over visiting Lakeland/Panas on Wednesday.
“I didn’t really notice it, to be honest,” Duff said of the cut. “Everyone on the offense and everyone on the team makes it easy for all of us.”
Aside from Duff’s goal-scoring prowess, the Huskers put on an excellent defensive display in the first half, pressuring the Lakeland/Panas attack and taking star attacker Molly Fitzpatrick out of the game.
At halftime, Yorktown led 8-2.
“We’re really connecting. I think all together, we know everyone on our team is strong,” senior Emily Concialdi said. “We’re confident in each other, and that’s really helping us out.”
Lakeland/Panas’ play improved in the second half, at one point getting three straight goals in a four-minute span to make it 11-6. However, that spurt was short-lived, and Yorktown scored five of the next six goals to clinch the win.
“They are moving the ball well and finding the open player,” Yorktown coach Ellen Mager said. “If we put the ball to the free player or the player who has the best match-up, a lot of good things can happen for this team.”
For the Huskers, Concialdi had three goals and an assist, Katie Comerford had three goals, while Rilea Fusco had three assists. For Lakeland/Panas, Katie Bradbury had three goals, Dana Bozek had two goals and an assist, Fitzpatrick had two goals and goalie Alex Halpin made 13 saves.
“I think when we started putting in a few more goals, we started getting more confident,” Bozek said. “We’re still trying people in new places, we’re still not used it.”
