CENTENNIAL – Aside from Overland taking on Cherry Creek tonight, the Cherokee Trail at Eaglecrest boys basketball game was the other one to watch. The Raptors are ranked on this week’s Colo. HS boys basketball AP media poll at No. 4, and the Cougars missed the poll this week – but are still a Centennial League force to be reckoned with.
In the first quarter, the Raptors were exactly how one would guess an actual raptor to be in real life: vicious. Eaglecrest started the game out on an 11-2 run. The Raptors only allowed a few more points from there, and led the Cougars 21-10 at the end of the quarter. But the Cougars jumped right back into it. A nice dunk from CT Junior David Thornton brought the Cougars within 4-points of the Raptors with just under five minutes left in the first half. At halftime, Eaglecrest led CT 36-27.
Eaglecrest continued to lead CT well into the third, and ended the quarter with a Raptor-dominant 53-43. A big triple by Eaglecrest Senior Peter Anderson put the Raptors up 61-48 with just under five minutes left in the game. But, once again, the Cougars fought and jumped right back in, only trailing the Raptors 67-61 with less than two minutes remaining. And then – another David Thornton dunk!! Just sick. Eaglecrest won the game with a final score of 73-65 over CT.
Eaglecrest improves to a 10-3 overall record and remains undefeated in conference play. The Raptors host the Grandview Wolves on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 pm. The Wolves are 6-7 overall.
Cherokee Trail’s overall record changes to 9-5, and plays another 9-5 Centennial rival/AP ranked team at Overland (No. 5) High School on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 pm. Something else these teams both have in common? Both lost to Eaglecrest, and beat Cherry Creek – other AP ranked teams at No. 4 and No. 9 respectively.
