Sophomore guard Eriana Brown drove the length of the court and scored at the buzzer to give East a 49-48 victory at Ankeny in a CIML girls’ basketball game on Friday.
The Hawkettes had taken a 48-47 lead when Molly Close made the second of two free throws with 5.7 seconds left. But East then inbounded the ball to Brown, who hurried up the court and banked in the game-winner from the left side over the outstretched arms of Close.
“It was a heartbreaker for us,” said Ankeny coach Brad Wilkening, whose team dropped to 0-2 on the season. “But you can’t let (Brown) get the ball inbounds with less than 6 seconds left and drive all the way to the hole and shoot a layup. We needed someone to step in front and make a stop, make her reverse her dribble, or pass it. Just veer her off one step, and the shot never would have made it.”
The Scarlets battled back from a 41-35 deficit in the fourth quarter and tied the score at 47 on a 3-point goal by freshman Kiana Sanders with 1:35 remaining. It was Sanders’ only basket of the game.
After the Hawkettes committed a turnover, East tried to hold the ball for a final shot. But Ankeny’s Codee Myers forced a turnover with about 10 seconds left, and Close was fouled in the ensuing scramble for the ball.
Myers led all scorers with 19 points. She made six consecutive free throws in the final period.
Nyachristmas Puck had 10 points to lead East’s balanced attack.
