One of the top track and field meets in the Midwest, the 30th annual Eastern Relays are set for Friday and Saturday at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Park.
Meet director Mike Horan, the girls coach at Eastern High School, said 150 schools from eight states will compete.
“We have about 30 more teams than last year,” he said. “A lot of it is teams sending their top four or five best kids and looking for really, really competitive opportunities. These are kids from all over the Midwest and Southeast who are usually winning their meets by 10 seconds and all coming to this meet to battle each other.”
Four No. 1-ranked teams from Kentucky are entered – St. Xavier boys (Class 3-A), Lexington Catholic girls (2-A), Bishop Brossart boys (A) and Murray girls (A).
Horan said other top schools in the field are Brentwood (Tenn.) Ravenwood, Cincinnati Withrow, Gahanna (Ohio) Lincoln, Mason (Ohio) and Nashville (Tenn.) Brentwood Academy.
The field is loaded with top distance runners, including Annie Heffernan of Cincinnati St. Ursula, Maggie Allen of Sacred Heart, Will Mulloy of St. Xavier and Kendall Muhammad of Paul Dunbar.
Friday’s events will start at 5 p.m. The meet will resume Saturday with field events at 9:30 a.m. and running events at 10 a.m.
