South Lyon East’s Jon McCarthy took home a gold medal at No. 3 singles in last week’s KLAA ‘B’ boys tennis tournament at Livonia Stevenson.

The host Spartans captured the team title with 22 points, while Livonia Franklin and South Lyon took second and third, respectivey, with 17 and 16.

Other area team finishers included White Lake Lakeland, sixth (14); Milford, seventh (11); and East, eighth (10).

The top seed, McCarthy defeated Stevenson’s Jack Dunne the finals, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), after it was suspended by rain from Oct. 3 to Oct. 6.

McCarthy went 3-0 in tournament play also defeating South Lyon’s Jacob Spierling, 6-0, 6-3, and Hartland’s Andy Auvenshine, 6-4, 6-0.

Singles wins for East came from John Kochanek (No. 1), Robert Reid (No. 2) and A.J. Clark (No. 4), along with doubles teams Nathan Anton and Tanner Ostraff (No. 2) and Josh Hengtgen and Carson Swadling (No. 3).

In Thursday’s MHSAA Division 2 regional, Walled Lake Western and host North Farmington finished one-two, while Cougars took sixth with four points.

McCarthy, who finished 18-5 on the year, earned a singles point along with Clark, while points points came from Anton and Ostaff (No. 2) along with Matthew Meadows and Swadling (No. 3).

Graduating seniors for the Cougars include Kochanek, Reid, Radloff, Matt Rochon and Meadows.

“These guys provided good leadership to the team and we will miss having them on the team next year,” East coach Matt Admiraal said. “Hopefully in the offs eason the guys will continue to work to improve their tennis game and hopefully we will also be able to add some new players to our team for next year.”
