Eastside rallied in the final 44 seconds Friday night to defeat Chapman 31-27 in a Peach Blossom AAA game. The Eagles moved to the Panthers 23-yard line. That’s where T.J. Gist and Tyius Lewis connected with four seconds left in the game for the win.
The Panthers had just driven 80 yards to take a 24-20 lead on quarterback Colton Bailey’s six-yard touchdown pass to Tim Beach. That followed Eastside’s first rally of the fourth quarter.
With 6:52 left in the game and Eastside down 20-17, Chapman punter Carlos Montalvo-Corrales dropped the snap on his own five-yard-line, giving the Eagles a first and goal. Two plays later, Qualen Anderson ran six yards for his second rushing touchdown of the game. That put Eastside ahead 24-20 with 6:19 to go.
Eastside (4-1, 2-0) took the first lead on a Deshawn Sullivan’s one-yard run at 8:33 of the opening period. Gist’s 40-yard pass to Lewis set up the score.
Chapman (3-2, 1-1) then fueled a 16-play, 80-yard scoring drive by converting all five third-down plays. Bailey finished the drive with a one-yard run, but the point after was no good. Eastisde led 7-6.
D.J. Twitty ran 28 yards at 10:58 of the second period to put Chapman ahead 12-7.
The Eagles went into halftime leading 14-12, thanks to Anderson’s first touchdown on a seven-yard run in the second quarter.
Alex Woznick booted a 26-yard field goal at 7:42 of the third quarter for a 17-12 Eastside lead.
Chapman took a 20-17 lead on a 28-yard pass from Bailey to Beach at 3:59 of the third period.
