USA TODAY High School Sports is launching a series called “60 for ’16” to highlight 60 members of the Class of 2016 who we will be watching in the coming 12 months. The athletes were selected by the USA TODAY HSS staff.
Name: Edrice Adebayo
School: Northside (Pinetown, N.C.)
Sport: Boys Basketball
What we’ve seen: Adebayo was quietly one of the most dominant players in the country last season, averaging 32.2 points and 21 rebounds per game and is just 106 points from the 2000-point mark for his career. In June, Adebayo led a balanced U.S. Select team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game. The team finished 3-0 at the 2015 adidas EuroCamp in Treviso, Italy. He’s continued that dominant run during the AAU season with Team Loaded (N.C.). Adeybayo averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds a game on the super-competitive adidas Gauntlet.
Why we’re watching: Adebayo’s nickname is “Bam-Bam”, how could we not watch! His mom gave him the name after he picked up the coffee table while they watched The Flinstones when he was 1 year old.
Truth is, most would assume that Adebayo earned the name from the ferocious manner in which he tries to tear the rim of its hinges on dunks.
Adebayo is ranked No. 8 overall in the ESPN 100 with North Carolina, North Carolina State, Maryland, Kansas, and many more elite college programs all in hot pursuit.
Adebayo, who stands 6-foot-9 and weighs 225 pounds, is quickly picking up one-and-done buzz after a stellar summer against the country’s top high school players.
