It’s easy to understand how fans of Cody High School sports in Wyoming might be confused when they check the box scores in the back of their local sports section. Based on those results, it appears that Elisha Smith is somehow simultaneously starring for the school’s swimming and tennis teams. The amazing thing is those results are accurate, with a twist: There are two Elisha Smiths at Cody, one for each sport.
As reported by the Cody Enterprise, a senior named Elisha Smith is a star 100-yard freestyle swimmer on the Cody team while a junior named Elisha Smith has emerged as a standout No. 2 singles player on the tennis team. The two run in different social and extracurricular circles, but are occasionally still confused by others because of their athletic success. You can see the swimming Smith, who is also a track athlete in the Spring, on the right in the photo above.
Now there’s another way for the two Elisha Smith’s to become conflated: They’re sharing a class together, and even sit directly next to each other.
According to the Enterprise, the junior Elisha Smith is called Elizabeth in class simple to differentiate between the two. That’s a tactic that works well for everyone … except the Elisha being called Elizabeth, who frequently forgets that she undergoes a one-period identity change each day.
Both teens have taken the experience of sharing a moniker in stride, even as they now have less than a full year together to keep confusing onlookers and friends. These are the perils of the last name ‘Smith’, which may become alleviated in the months ahead as both eventually wrap up productive high school sports careers.
