We caught up with a handful of elite players from around the country and had them zero-in on which skill they were most thankful to possess in observance of Thanksgiving.

From wicked passing ability to the marksman accuracy from deep they dished on the “what” and the “why.”

Michael Porter Jr., Father Tolton Catholic (Columbia, Mo.), F, 2017

College: Undecided

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My ability to rebound and push the ball myself.”

Here’s why… “I can be the point guard. If I get a board I don’t have to wait on a guard, I can start the break. Our coach stresses that I just go. Most guys my size (6-foot-10) wait on the guard, but I get a lot of points  and have a lot of dunks off of my ability to grab a rebound and handle the ball myself so I’m most thankful for that.”

Jaylen Fornes, Word of God Christian Academy (Raleigh, N.C.), SG, 2016

College: UNC Wilmington

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My ability to create.”

Here’s why… “I can create for my jump shot, catch-and-shoot and shoot off the dribble; that’s what I’m most thankful for.”

Troy Brown Jr., Centennial (Las Vegas), PG, 2017

College: Undecided

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My court vision.”

Here’s why… “It makes me unique as a player and helps me understand the game more smoothly.”

Gary Trent Jr., Apple Valley (Apple Valley, Minn.), SG, 2017

College: Undecided

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My determination and my will.”

Here’s why… “It helps me lock in and helps me talk to myself and know that no one can stop me and no one’s even gonna score on me. It helps me takeover the game. It’s just take me to a whole other level.”

Brandon Robinson, Douglas County (Douglasville, Ga.), SG, 2016

College: North Carolina

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My shooting ability.”

Here’s why… “It makes it easier to score. You can stretch the defense, and when you start getting hot people are going to try to play your shot and run out on you fast so you pump-fake and get to the cup. My shooting ability makes it hard for defenders to guard me because they know they have to play up on me and I’m quick enough and can handle the ball well enough to go by them if they play too tight.”

Drue Drinnon, East Jackson (Commerce, Ga.), PG, 2018

College: Undecided

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My IQ.”

Here’s why… “Most people won’t count it as a skill, but I feel like the skill that I’m most thankful for is my IQ or feel for the game because not all players have that. It comes naturally. You can’t develop IQ like you can with shooting, ball handling and defense, so what I’m most thankful for is probably different than everybody else.”

Lonzo Ball, Chino Hills (Chino Hills, Calif.), PG, 2016

College: UCLA

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My passing ability.”

Here’s why… “When you pass people wanna play with you; it can make others better and promotes unselfishness throughout the team.”

Devon Dotson, Providence Day (Charlotte, N.C.), PG, 2018

College: Undecided

The skill I’m most thankful for is… “My ball handling and my speed.”

Here’s why… “Ball handling opens up many opportunities; it can get you out of a trap and set up an offense more fluently, and with my speed I can blow past my defenders and get to the basket at will and push the tempo.”
