Enumclaw softball left no doubt Tuesday that it’s the best team in SPSL 3A.

In a game between teams unbeaten in league play, the Hornets finished off Auburn Mountainview 11-1 in five innings.

Enumclaw has now beat every team in SPSL 3A and has outscored its opponents (including non-conference) by a combined 122-3 this year.

“[Auburn Mountainview] was No. 2 so we wanted to come in and make a statement and just see how we were against the second best team out there,” Enumclaw head coach Mike Eckhart said.

The Hornets’ success Tuesday started on the mound. Junior Quinn Breidenbach improved to 8-0 on the year, striking out nine. The only blemishes were an infield hit in the fourth inning and a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth – both by Auburn Mountainview’s Zoe Collins.

The bats got going early for Enumclaw, too. Sophomore third baseman Madelyn Carlson had a two-RBI triple in the first and a two-run home run in the third. The Hornets scored 10 runs in those two innings.

Carlson also pitches for Enumclaw and played first base for last year’s team that finished second in state. She’s had 38 consecutive games without an error.

“I think she’s probably the most underrated player out there,” Eckhart said of Carlson.

Breidenbach helped her own cause with a single that scored Tammy Wilkening in the third. She knows that Enumclaw’s offense always has her back when she’s on the mound.

“Our bats are crazy,” Breidenbach said. “I know that even if I do get hit off … I know that we’re going to come back and we’re just going to hit the ball really hard. So I’m pretty confident and I know the rest of the team is.”

Auburn Mountainview head coach Alicia Thompson said that next time her team plays Enumclaw, “I want to come at them stronger.”

“I’ll give it to Quinn because that girl can throw,” she added. “We knew coming into it that she can throw so I think my girls gave up a little too easily from the start.”

Enumclaw continues its season Wednesday with a non-league game against Kentwood. Auburn Mountainview plays Bonney Lake Thursday.
