Epps fought off every charge from Ouachita Christian in a game that featured the score being tied five times and three different lead changes for a 50-43 win the championship game of the 2015 OCS Duck Commander Tournament Saturday at OCS.
OCS closed the first half on a 6-0 run and held a 22-16 lead, but Epps came firing back in the third quarter, carried the momentum into the fourth, and was able to secure the teams 11th consecutive win at the free throw line.
Epps (21-3) was 9-of-16 at the free throw line including a cool 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the charity stripe in the second half. Leading scorer Alexus Holt was 7-of-7 on her way to a game-high 29 points and 12 rebounds.
OCS (9-8) saw its halftime lead quickly disappear in the third quarter as the shots would not fall for the Lady Eagles. OCS made just 6-of-21 from the field in the second half.
Despite the loss, coach Jeremy Shackelford was pleased by what his team showed they are capable of ahead of the district opener Tuesday at rival St. Frederick.
“I just told our girls after the game that I was very proud of the way they battled the whole game,” Shackelford said. “That was very encouraging for us going into district play.”
Kelsey Booth led the way for OCS with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Alayna Johnson added 13 points and eight boards.
