Here is a recap of Saturday’s basketball game between the Erwin and Smoky Mountain girls from Harrison Slaughter:
Despite a sluggish start, the Erwin girls’ basketball team defeated Smoky Mountain 64-48 in an early season battle of undefeated teams.
Erwin quickly scored the first basket of the game, but the Lady Mustangs responded with a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead.
“At first we weren’t really playing together and we weren’t really running our plays like we should and our coaches told us what we needed to be doing,” said Kendra Griffin (10 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists), Erwin senior shooting guard.
Erwin used a full court press, which made the Lady Mustangs visibly uncomfortable getting the ball up the court. The Lady Warriors closed the first half on a 25-10 run taking a 28-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Smoky Mountain coach Eric Toedtman said his team needs to work on the speed of the game.
“We’re capable of playing at a faster tempo. I think Erwin reminded us of that tempo tonight,” Toedtman said.
Erwin coach Terry Gossett said he didn’t think his team played particularly well.
“It’s good to come out with a win not playing well. We didn’t shoot the ball from the free throw line very good,” Gossett said. “Smoky Mountain is a good basketball team. They are a well coached team and we feel good about coming out of here with a win.”
Smoky Mountain cut the lead to five early in the second half, but Erwin used a 17-7 run to extend their lead to 15. The Lady Mustangs never brought it closer than 13 after this.
“I think our backcourt played well. In the second half, Kendra Griffin and Dalton Gossett played well. Overall, as a team, I thought we were a little sluggish tonight,” Gossett said. “We didn’t execute our offense like we have been the last three games.”
Dalton Gossett (23 points, 3 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists), Erwin senior point guard said she thought both teams played extremely hard.
“We’re just really grateful we were able to come out with a win,” Gossett said. “We hustled the whole time and we’re just really thankful that we played as a team.”
“Hats off to Erwin. They’re a great team. They are definitely a team that’s on a mission. They know what they want and they’re going to go get it, “Toedtman said. “We’re still young and growing. Thank goodness this thing is a marathon and not a sprint. Each day, we are just looking to make improvements. We get to play a team like this early and it gives us a good indication of where we are and where we need to go.”
