The Estero girls swimming team saw the Lee County Athletic Conference meet as a great place to prepare for the upcoming district meet.
And during the tune-up, the Wildcats collected plenty of first-place ribbons along the way.
Estero won five first-place medals with some new entries in a few events and wound up with the LCAC team title Thursday afternoon in the conference meet at the Fort Myers Aquatic Center.
“This was meet for bragging rights. It wasn’t a one-and-done meet, so we did some experimenting with a lot of things,” Estero coach Tim Jacobson said. “It was exciting for all of us, especially with Bean and Kaitlyn winning their races. They probably won’t be swimming in the events they did today in the district meet, so it was great that they did so well.”
Bean Faunce won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, setting a school record in the latter.
Kaitlyn Hauser won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke for Estero.
The Wildcats also won the 200 and 400 relays.
Estero was first with 469 points. Cape Coral was second and Fort Myers came in third.
The LCAC teams will all get two weeks of rest before the district meet in Punta Gorda.
“We figured it would be a competitive meet,” Jacobson said. “Fort Myers and Cape Coral are always good, and Riverdale was a lot better than we expected. We’ve gotten ready for Punta Gorda.”
The Seahawks also impressed their coach, Dianne Kimble.
“It was nice for our girls to come away with some LCAC titles,” Kimble said. “We were really pumped to see that we were winning the meet for a while.”
Savannah Bowser won the 50 free for Cape Coral, and Megan Galbreath took first in diving and Nicole Jimenez won the 100 butterfly.
Fort Myers’ Kendall Brent won the 200 and 500 freestyle.
In the boys competition, a combination of youth and leadership helped Cape Coral blow away the rest of the field for the team title.
The Seahawks won the crown by a 108-point margin. Cape Coral was first with 458 and Fort Myers was runner-up with 350.
“I’m excited for the boys right now,” Kimble said. “We graduated a lot from a year ago, so we had a lot of freshman on the team. Our upperclassmen showed a lot of leadership today. And it was fantastic to see the young boys do so well. Every time I turned around, someone was doing something fantastic.”
Steven Rua won the 200 individual medley for Cape Coral, and his sophomore teammate Jonah Martinez won the 100 breaststroke. And Seahawk freshman Jack Pellegrino won the 100 butterfly.
The Seahawks boys also won the 200 relay.
The Green Wave were led by Clay Riemenschneider, who won the 200 and 500 freestyles, and Matt Lucker, who prevailed in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Lucker and Riemenschneider also were on the Green Wave’s winning 200 freestyle relay team. The Green Wave won the 400 free relay.
Cameron Dolly also won the 100 backstroke for Fort Myers.
Estero was third in the meet with 223 points.
“We’re a little undermanned on the boys side this year,” Jacobson said. “We only have nine guys, so we may not have the depth to compete with other teams. But we’re doing well with what we have, so we hope to advance some guys into the region meet.”
