MARSHFIELD – For D.C. Everest seniors Don Veverka and Joe Ziolkowski, Saturday’s regional was just another stepping stone for their aspirations of returning to the state meet.
Ziolkowski won his fourth regional title and Veverka his second as the duo helped the Evergreens claim second place at the WIAA Division 1 regional in Marshfield.
Stevens Point won its first regional title with a score of 216.5 points.Everest had 167.5 points, with Merrill finishing a close third with 163.5. Wausau West finished in fifth with 151.5 and Wausau East placed eighth with 63.
The top four finishers in each weight class qualified for the sectional meet, which will be held at Eau Claire North next Saturday.
“I feel we wrestled well today, but just had a tough second round,” Everest coach Eric Lehrke said. “We got 10 of the 11 guys we had wrestling today into the sectional, so we feel pretty good about that.”
Ziolkowski (145) earned a 5-0 decision over Point’s Dakota Kelz to claim his title, while Veverka (120) edged Point’s Chance Bailey by an 8-5 margin.
“The guys have been here before and know what to do,” Lehrke said. “We just need to clean up the little things and wrestle our best from here on out.”
Merrill also had a pair of repeat champions in Scott Arneson (132) and Mason Reinhardt (170). The pair each claimed their third regional crowns. Arneson needed just 3 minutes, 9 seconds to pin Rhinelander’s Jon Fox, while Reinhardt pinned Rhinelander’s Alec Kurtz in 1:51.
The Bluejays also got a title from Hunter Welch (138), who outlasted Point’s Tyler Hall 9-7. Merrill also got one runner-up, Christian Kleinschmidt (285), and will send seven wrestlers to sectionals.
Wausau West qualified eight for the sectional with one champion, Nathan Tessmer (285), who needed just 1:41 to pin Kleinschmidt. The Warriors also had a pair of second-place finishers.
