Sometimes the loss of someone or something close to us causes us to step back and re-evaluate what is important in our lives.
For North Side’s Marquis Clark, God has always been in the center, but last season, Clark felt the devastation of losing some of his belongings and the place he called home when his house caught on fire.
The accident happened on the same day that North Side was preparing to play city rival South Side in front of a packed house.
But at that moment basketball wasn’t on his mind. He wasn’t going to play, but God changed his mind.
“God pushed me to play in that game,” Clark said. “I wasn’t going to play, but I prayed and gave it over to Him. We ended up winning that game.”
After suffering the loss of possessions last year, this past week and the Thanksgiving holiday had a more apparent meaning for Clark.
“I am very thankful for the things I have and what God has given me,” he said.
Clark works as an encourager in his everyday life.
“I try to encourage everyone and tell them to never give up,” he said. “I pray for them. Prayer is very big for me because you have to talk to God because He answers prayer.”
The same can be said when Clark is on the basketball court for North Side.
“God helps me keep my focus right, helps me push and helps me to encourage my teammates, whether they mess up or if they do something right.”
Clark attends Agape Christian Fellowship Church in Jackson, and he is active within the choir, goes to prayer service on Friday and services on Wednesday and he is a member of a group that goes door to door to tell people about God.
“God is everything,” Clark said. “He is hope and peace, and without Him, everything won’t work right.”
Clark said that he reads his Bible often, and one story that he enjoys is the story of David and Goliath.
“I enjoy that story because of all of the obstacles that David had to overcome,” he said.
