Falcons knock off defending county champion

For Union’s girls and Winchester’s boys, it was solid afternoon wins to get to the Randolph County Tournament finales.

For one, it was a continuation of a winning streak. For the other, a return to the winning side.

In a Saturday matinee session necessitated by the week’s winter weather, the Rockets began a day of four tournament games by pulling ahead in the second quarter to go on and beat Winchester 53-33.

By mid-afternoon, the boys basketball Golden Falcons used a stellar defensive effort to beat defending champion Monroe Central 56-32 in the first boys hoop semifinal.

Both teams advance to final games on Monday night.

Winchester’s boys team had lost three games in a row, and stood 5-3 in facing the 7-4 Golden Bears, the defending county tournament boys champions.

Led by Kiante Enis and the junior’s 21 points, it was defense that actually turned the tide for Winchester on Saturday afternoon. Winchester got ahead from a 6-6 tie to lead 15-11 at the first break.

The Golden Falcons dominated on defense for the next 10 minutes, as MC could get make just one free throw in the entire second quarter. It was 30-12 at intermission, and when the Golden Falcons recorded three quick two-point fielders to start the second half, the score was 36-12, Winchester.

Even a spirited third-quarter run of 14 Golden Bear points couldn’t threaten a big Falcon lead.

“It was really nice to see how our guys went after loose balls, and worked on defense,” Winchester head coach Matt Fine said. “I like my teams to have that ‘warrior mentality,’ and the guys are learning to play for each other. I am proud of both those things. Our group has really started to come together as a team.”

Michael Georgi had 10 points for the Golden Falcons, while Alan Brutchen added eight. Elias Gates had just five points, and, unofficially, 12 rebounds.

Beau Combs and Jansen Blevins each had eight points to lead Monroe Central.

In Saturday’s first game, DeAnn Kauffman had 17 points for Union, while Faithlan Ellis added 10 and Rylee Davis nine.

Union dominated on the glass, with an unofficial total of 37 rebounds.

Mariah Roberts had 12 points for Winchester, while Liz Pegg added 11.

Union is now 13-1, with 13 straight wins since an opening game road loss at state-ranked Shenandoah.

“We always come out playing slow in these daytime games, but I have a group of smart girls that know how they have to play to win games, and overcame some adversity today with the slow start,” said first-year Union girls coach Andrew Moore. “This girls work hard, play hard, and know when they aren’t playing well. This is another good win for our team.”

The Golden Falcons are now 2-12 and return to action on Jan. 19, hosting Centerville in a Tri-Eastern Conference game.
