Fan vote: Rockland County player of the year

By

For the first time ever this year, our annual selection of the area’s top high school basketball talent will also include fan-voted all-star and all-county teams. The players and coaches will be selected by YOU, the reader.Voting will begin today and run until Thursday, April 16 at 2 p.m. For further explanation, read here.

The top vote-getter will be named the fans’ player of the year. Remember: If there’s a player not listed who you believe is worthy, add him to the list. If there are enough votes for players not included in the original poll, I will add them to the list.

Here are the candidates:

Rickey McGill, Spring Valley: Section 1’s Mr. Basketball led his team to its first Section 1 title in 19 years. The Iona-bound guard then put the Tigers into the Class A state semifinals by beating the buzzer against Saugerties in the regional final. He averaged 23.1 ppg and finished his four-year career as Spring Valley’s all-time leading scorer. It was good enough for second on the county’s all-time scoring list.

Conor McGuinness, Clarkstown South: The Adelphi-bound guard proved he was Section 1’s best pure point guard. He led the Vikings to a 16-6 record, including a surprise appearance in the Class AA final. McGuinness hit the biggest shot of Championship Week when he buried a pull-up jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining to defeat Arlington in the Class AA semifinals. McGuinness averaged 21.0 ppg and was the second-leading vote-getter in the race for Mr. Basketball.

Luke McLaughlin, Tappan Zee: The 6-foot-4 forward averaged 22.2 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in the regular season. He then increased his production in the playoffs, averaging 25 ppg, including 33 in the first round against Pearl River. The Pace-bound McLaughlin finished with 1,146 career points.

Kai Mitchell, Spring Valley: As McGill flourished, the 6-foot-5 big man developed into more of an all-around player. He averaged 14.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.1 blocks per game and busted opposing zones with his interior passing. The Iona commit will play a year of prep at St. Thomas More after finishing his four-year career seventh all-time on the Rockland scoring list.
