Southwest Florida Christian lost a heartbreaker to First Baptist, 14-7 Friday night.
On the Kings’ first play from scrimmage, Tristian Upton broke through the line and rumbled 72 yards for a touchdown. One wondered if this game would be high scoring. Instead, it turned out to be their only score.
The Lions responded with a six-play march down the field to even the score as quarterback Tyler Dean hit Blane Briggs for a 13-yard touchdown.
Then on their next possession, the Lions drove 67 yards in seven plays, all rushes. The last 33 yards were covered by Jayce Howell who sprinted into the end zone. That put First Baptist ahead 14-7 just before the end of the first quarter.
The rest of the game was two “bend, but don’t break” defenses. SFCA had the ball 7 minutes of the second quarter and moved the ball 50 yards, but was stopped on downs at the Lions’ 25. The Lions then drove down to the SFCA 5 and fumbled the ball away. The last play of the half was a Lions’ pass that was intercepted in the end zone and run back 60 yards as the buzzer sounded.
Defense dominated the third quarter as three fourth-down stops and two punts ended all of the offensive drives.
The fourth quarter was almost the same. Both of SFCA’s drives were stopped on fourth down, and two of First Baptist’s drives were stopped by fumbles.
The King’s had an opportunity to tie the game with 4:20 left with the ball on the Lions’ 20. But two Justin Vazquez passes fell incomplete in the end zone.
“The hardest part was watching the kids have a chance to win and we don’t do it. But we will hold our heads up high.” SFCA head coach Mike Marciano said.
