JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The First Coast Buccaneers kicked off spring practice on Monday while mourning the loss of teammate Johnell Johnson.
Police say Johnson was shot and killed over the weekend while attending a party after his prom.
First Coast head football coach Marty Lee says this was the first time in his 30-year coaching career that he had to start spring football with a lesson on loss, this time in “the game of life.”
Lee says Johnson was a leader in the community, who was ambitious, humble and a wonderful student and player.
Lee also called for the leaders in the city of Jacksonville to come together to organize outreach programs to help curb the violence in our communities.
Lee says you can’t wait until a young person is a junior or senior in high school but action must be taken when the people are in elementary school.
Lee says he also plans to get with other athletic directors and coaches to organize outreach programs to help students on the First Coast.
