Flippin rolls past Cotter, 15-1

By

Flippin and Cotter had just two hits each in Tuesday’s 3A-1 East Conference game, but it was the Lady Bobcats who took advantage of 17 free passes offered by Lady Warriors pitching to claim a 15-1 victory in four innings at the TLC Bank Sports Complex.

The Lady Warriors (1-4) return to action on Thursday when they travel to Bergman for a 3A-1 East Conference game. Flippin improves to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 against 3A-1 East foes.

Cotter starting pitcher Macie Clawson did not allow a hit through the first 22/3 innings of the game, but the Lady Bobcats scored 11 runs off the freshman, benefiting from seven walks and four hit-by-pitches.

Rebecca Martin took over in the circle for Cotter with two outs in the third, and Flippin’s Karlee Wood added a single that scored a run and took third on an error that allowed two more runs to score. All three runs were credited to Clawson, and the Lady Bobcats held an 11-1 lead.

Flippin’s Abby Helmke and Sydney Riggs each drew free passes, loading the bases, and Wood scored on a passed ball to make it 12-1.

Martin coaxed Marlie Flippin into a groundout to end the inning. The grounder resulted in a force out, but an extra run appeared on the scoreboard, which would end up causing the game to end prematurely due to the run rule.

Alyssa Spoon and Megan Coatney each walked for Flippin in the fourth inning, and Hannah Butcher reached on Cotter’s fourth error of the game. Coatney scored to make it 15-1, but as the scoreboard read 16-1, the game was called without protest.

Butcher and Wood each had hits for the Lady Bobcats, while Marie Reed and Hanny Garay each had hits for Cotter.

The Lady Warriors scored their lone run in the top of the third. Rebecca Martin reached on an error and stole second, and Clawson and Shawna Martin each walked to load the bases.

Gracie Lance supplied an RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Rebecca Martin to climb within 4-1. Another flyout and a fielder’s choice got Flippin pitcher Marlie Flippin out of the jam. The Lady Warriors stranded seven baserunners over the first three innings.

The Lady Bobcats scored once in the first as Butcher received a free pass and scored a run, and the hosts received three more in the second as Flippin, Malaina Gonzalez and Spoon all received free passes and scored.

Marlie Flippin struck out two and allowed two hits and four walks over four innings in the circle.

Clawson struck out a pair of batters and allowed eight earned runs.

Rebecca Martin struck out one and allowed five walks and two hits for Cotter.
