FORT MILL, S.C. — In the final Friday Night Frenzy Game of the Week for 2014-15, bitter rivals Nation Ford and Fort Mill hit the hardwood to close the regular season.
In the first varsity battle, the Lady Falcons had no trouble with the visiting Yellow Jackets, dominating the first quarter from start to finish, leading 21-5 when the horn sounded. In the second, it was more of the same for Nation Ford. The horn sounded mercifully to give Fort Mill a break, trailing Nation Ford 37-15.
The Lady Jackets started to find their mojo in the third, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome, with Nation Ford holding on for a 50-29 victory.
With the Nation Ford gym filled to standing room only capacity, the boys got things going shortly after 8:00 pm. Both teams struggled early offensively, with the homestanding Falcons clinging to a 13-8 lead following the first quarter. The second quarter belonged to the Falcons. Nation Ford outscored Fort Mill 17-10 in the period, racing out to a 30-18 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
In the second half, points were at a premium with both offenses grinding to a snail’s pace. A combined 14 points in the third saw the Falcons up 36-26 with one quarter to play. Throughout the second half, Fort Mill’s inability to knock down field goals doomed the Yellow Jackets, with Nation Ford getting into the bonus early. For Nation Ford, the bonus came at a good time, as the Falcons’ offense had gone cold in the third quarter. They did what they needed to do on the free throw line, pulling away for a 49-30 victory to end their season. Fort Mill will open the playoffs on Wednesday.
