The Fond du Lac boys volleyball team may have dropped its season opener to Appleton North on Tuesday, but the score doesn’t show how well the Cardinals played.

The Lightning came into the season ranked No. 6 in the state, but the Cardinals hung tough, losing 26-24, 25-20 and 25-17.

“The team played very well and competed with the preseason ranked No. 6 in the state,” Fondy coach Royal Smit said. “I thought it was some of the cleanest volleyball that our program has played since I have been coaching.”

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Michael Barbeau, who had 12 kills and two blocks while Will Mockert recorded 18 assists and five aces. Spencer Burbach added four blocks, Blake Badke had eight kills and Ethan Kondo had six digs. Cody Peterson chipped in five digs in the loss for Fondy.
