The Kershaw County School Board today selected Mathew Campbell—a former NFL and USC Gamecock football player—as the new Lugoff-Elgin High School (LEHS) football coach and activities director. Campbell has been the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) for the past five years but has also previously coached and been an athletic director at the high school level.
“We had great interest in this position from persons both inside and outside of South Carolina,” said Lugoff-Elgin High School Principal Worth Thomasson. “Coach Campbell has worked at the high school and college level and is looking forward to returning to his home state and roots. Mr. Campbell has tremendous knowledge of the game and a real commitment to all sports. We are very excited and proud to have him join the Lugoff-Elgin High School family.”
After four years at the University of South Carolina on a full scholarship, Campbell played for nine years on the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins and Houston Texans teams. He received the Gamecock Award while in college and was named Offensive Player of the Game six times in the NFL. He was twice inducted into the North Augusta Hall of Fame for his football career at North Augusta High School.
After leaving the NFL, he served as the athletic director at Cross Episcopal School in Bluffton before becoming the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Bluffton High School for two years. Campbell has a human resources degree from the University of South Carolina and is certified in math.
Married to Jeanene, the Campbells have four children: Hunter, 17; Madi, 14; Jacob, 11; and Matt, Jr., 8. Campbell has volunteered extensively including service with the Huntersville (NC) and Bluffton (SC) police departments, the Make-A-Wish foundation and the Child Abuse Prevention Association.
Campbell said he has “a true passion for education and athletics,” and looks forward to creating “a winning tradition both on the field and in the classroom” at LEHS.
