Class 7A state semifinal
Viera (9-4) at Columbia (12-1)
7:30 p.m., Lake City
Last week: The Hawks defeated Lakeland, 24-14. The Tigers beat Bartram Trail, 51-14.
Game note: While this is Viera’s first state semifinal in football, Columbia hasn’t been this far since 2003. The Tigers were state runners-up in 1964 and 1997, winning a Class A state championship in 1967.
Viera coach Kevin Mays on Columbia: “They are our mirror image. Their quarterback (junior Davin Schuck) has thrown for 3,500 yards, and they have three or four play-makers. There will be a bunch of guys on the field on both teams that could score at any point. Defensively, they’ve given up points, and we’ve given up points.”
Directions: Take the Beachline (FL-528) west to the Florida Turnpike at exit 4, and then head north. At the end of the Turnpike, merge onto I-75 north. Travel 86 miles to exit 414, for US 41 north, and turn right (north). In 10.7 miles, the school will be on your right.
Winner gets: A spot in the Class 7A state championship, Dec. 11 at Orlando’s Citrus Bowl against the winner of the Braden River-St. Thomas Aquinas game.
