The Archbishop Hoban High School varsity football team is set to play in the program’s first state championship game on Thursday when it faces Toledo Central Catholic in the Division III title tilt at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
Hoban (13-1) features a potent offensive attack led by junior quarterback Danny Clark and junior tailback Todd Sibley and a fast, attacking defense led by seniors Jonah Morris and Tyler Gilchrist and junior Dane Kersh.
The Knights’ 2015 resume includes two wins against rival St. Vincent-St. Mary, including a 24-21 win in Week 13 to capture the Region 7 championship.
Third-year head coach Tim Tyrrell spoke about his team and the title game with reporters from across the state via teleconference on Monday.
Since starting the season 0-2, Toledo Central Catholic has won out – including a 31-30 double-overtime win against previously unbeaten Benedictine in the Region 8 title game – en route to earning the right to return to the title game and play for its second consecutive Division III state championship.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
