As part of our South Jersey high school football coverage, we want to know a little bit more about some of the region’s players. Kimere Brown, a senior wide receiver/defensive back from Penns Grove, talked over a variety of things with reporter Kevin Minnick.
KM: What’s it like playing home games on Saturday instead of under the lights on Friday?
KB: It’s really no different to me. If we play at home on Saturday, we have the home-field advantage.
KM: What’s been the key to your success as a wide receiver?
KB: A real big key is that we have a quarterback (Ja’yon Mejias) who’s pretty good. He can get all the receivers the ball.
KM: What about being a defensive back?
KB: I’m just playing and locking in on my man. I’m staying focused and I use my speed so that no one gets away from me. I stay with my man at all times.
KM: You’re committed to Temple. What sold you on the Owls?
KB: I chose Temple because it’s pretty close to home. I like the atmosphere, the players. I got along with everyone and they treated me like I was a home.
KM: What other schools were in the mix?
KB: Pitt, N.C. State. Monmouth, Albany and Towson looked at me, too, as a receiver.
KM: What team would you love to play that’s not on your schedule?
KB: I’d love to play Camden Catholic. They’re a good program, beat Camden. I like a challenging game and they’d really offer a challenge if we played them. They’re heavily skilled, just like we are.
KM: What do you like best about attending Penns Grove?
KB: I grew up here my whole life. I like the support people give us at games and all the support we get from the teachers.
KM: If I came to town and wanted to grab lunch, where do I go?
KB: Pat’s Pizza. That’s one of the best places around Penns Grove. I’d get a mushroom slice. If you don’t like mushroom, the next best choice would be a cheesesteak.
KM: What do you normally eat before a game?
KB: Usually when I wake up I’ll have pancakes, bacon and eggs. My mom makes it before every game.
KM: Who’s your biggest fan?
KB: My grandpop. He’s been coming to all of my games since I was 7 years old.
KM: Growing up, did you have a favorite NFL player you wanted to be like?
KB: LaDainian Tomlinson is my favorite player of all time.
KM: What’s your favorite subject in school?
KB: I like English. I like to write and get creative with my writing.
KM: What’s the last movie you saw?
KB: Halloween II
KM: Are you going trick or treating?
KB: No. We actually play Camden in the morning and then I’m going to the Notre Dame-Temple game.
KM: Do you have a favorite TV show?
KB: I really don’t watch too much TV.
KM: Describe Coach Emel in couple words.
KB: Hard working, dedicated and a man of his word. When he says he’ll do something, he does it.
KM: The playoffs are getting closer. What do the Red Devils need to improve on most?
KB: We need to work on staying sound on defense. We have a pretty good defense once we start rolling. We’ve had slow starts, which could be a problem in the playoffs. But once we get rolling and start clicking, we’re a pretty good team.
KM: If I gave you two dollars, what would you do with it?
KB: I’d probably go buy a mushroom slice from Pat’s.
