Inside the Huddle
As part of our preseason look into South Jersey football, we want to know a little bit more about some of the region’s players. Cole Keyes, a senior tight end/linebacker, talked over a variety of things with reporter Kevin Minnick.
KM: What are some things you bring to the table for this team?
CK: From a defensive standpoint, I can step up as a leader along with the other linebackers. Offensively, I’d like to get the ball a little more and help by blocking and catching passes.
KM: Your team enjoyed tremendous success last season. What’s it going to take to do it again?
CK: We have to bring it on the defensive side of the ball again. We were pretty dominant last year and gave the ball to the offense as much as we could. They should be able to capitalize on some of the turnovers that we can cause.
KM: What’s your favorite TV show?
CK: Right now, Hard Knocks.
KM: How much time do you spend watching film?
CK: A few hours a week. Game film from the previous week to correct our mistakes and then some film on the next opponent.
KM: What do you expect out of yourself this season?
CK: I just want to help the team as much as I can on both sides of the ball.
KM: What kind of music do you listen to?
CK: A little country you could say. Waylon Jennings, the old stuff. It’s a little different. My dad got me into it I guess.
KM: Which school is your biggest rival?
CK: Cherokee. Just the hype around the game every year. They beat us two years ago and we beat them last year. We just like banging heads. It’s always a good football game.
KM: Is there a team not your schedule that you’d love to face?
CK: Kingsway and Williamstown, but we could meet them in the playoffs.
KM: What’s your favorite college team?
CK: Ohio State.
KM: Do you have college plans yet?
CK: If I can play college football, I will. I’m looking at some schools.
KM: Who is the funniest kid on the team?
CK: Jered Erlanger our outside linebacker. It’s just his personality. He plays with his head on fire and he’s not the biggest guy on the field. His personality definitely helps.
KM: What does Coach McAneney do to fire up the troops?
CK: He’s always pretty much telling us that we’re not going to surprise anybody this year. We have a target on our back and everyone will game plan to play us.
KM: If I gave you two dollars, what would you do with it?
CK: That’s a tough one. I really don’t know. … How much are lottery tickets? I’d probably save it for some gas.
