Junior wide receiver Eddie Lewis returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and also had a 40-yard TD reception, and sophomore quarterback Kyle Devaney threw for two TDs and 103 yards, as visiting Mater Dei Prep defeated Keansburg 35-0 Saturday in a Shore Conference Class B Central game.
The Seraphs’ win came in 1989 Mater Dei graduate Shannon Hoadley’s first game as a head coach. The win also came in the first football game since the school went through a tumultous winter and early spring — when it nearly closed before enough money was raised to keep it open.
Hoadley was named head coach in early June after the school announced Steve Sciarappa had left the program. Mater Dei’s players and coaching staff doused Hoadley with a Gatorade bath during a post-game ceremony.
Devanney also threw a 7-yard TD pass to junior wide receiver Justice George.
Junior running back Jonathan Lubintus had a 13-yard TD run and seven carries for 71 yards. Junior linebacker Juwan Mitchell returned a funble 45 yards for a TD.
Freshman running back Andrew Spann had five carries for 62 yards.
Mater Dei had 286 yards of total offense and held Keansburg to 50 yards of total offense.
Raritan 26, Manasquan 14: Derek Ernst ran for two TDs in the fourth quarter as the Rockets (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Warriors (0-1, 0-1) at Manasquan’s Vic Kubu Warrior Field in a Class A Central game.
It was the second straight season Raritan defeated Manasquan in the opener.
Ernst had TD runs of 1 and 4 yards. He set up his first TD with a 60-yard run in which he broke through several would-be tackle attempts. That TD made the score 19-7 midway in the fourth quarter.
Junior quarterback Marc Carnivale threw a 27-yard TD pass to senior wide receiver Mason Sheehan, and junior lineman Paul Bavaro returned a fumble 67 yards for a TD after a sack by junior lineman Matt Thompson that caused the fumble.
