MURFREESBORO –

Three former Rutherford County high school players were chosen Wednesday on the final day of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft.

Former Riverdale pitchers Johnathan Frebis and Dylan King along with former Blackman first baseman Zander Wiel all had their names called.

King and Frebis were the second and third former Riverdale players chosen this draft. Ronnie Jebavy, a former Riverdale outfielder, was chosen in the fifth round by the San Francisco Giants Tuesday. Riverdale has now had five players drafted in the history of the school.

“It’s been a surreal day,” Riverdale baseball coach Barry Messer said. “This makes you appreciate every player that has walked through the door.

“All three of those guys are high character and great people. It’s definitely a special day for the Riverdale community. I don’t think people realize how big of a deal that is. Three in two days is pretty special.”

Wiel, a Vanderbilt 6-foot-3 redshirt junior, was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the 350th overall pick in the 12th round. Wiel is hitting .316 this season with 14 home runs and 65 RBIs. Wiel is headed to the College World Series with the Commodores for the second consecutive season.

King, a 6-foot-3 right-hander who graduated from Riverdale in May, was chosen with the 749th pick in the 25th round by the New York Mets. King, who was the District 7-AAA Pitcher of the Year and The Daily News Journal’s Pitcher of the Year, went 7-1 in 2015 with a 1.49 ERA in nine starts. The Belmont signee had seven complete games and four shutouts.

“I was watching TV when I got drafted,” King said. “I wasn’t watching the draft. (Former Riverdale teammate) Ryan Vincion texted me first. Then about five minutes later (the Mets) called me.

“I was just excited to be drafted. I didn’t think I would be that high.”

King said he hasn’t decided if he will go to Belmont or sign with the Mets. He said he does plan to talk to the Mets on what they can offer financially.

King struck out 80 batters and walked just four batters this past season. King is the second Riverdale pitcher to be selected by the Mets in as many years. Lipscomb University pitcher Brady Puckett was chosen in the 33rd round in last year’s draft by the Mets.

King said Puckett’s success at Riverdale last year likely helped him in his exposure.

“I think Puckett set it for me,” King said. “It got my name out. Hopefully, this keeps trickling down (to other Riverdale players).”

Frebis, a 6-3 left-hander and recent MTSU graduate, was selected with 982nd pick in the 33rd round by the Chicago White Sox. Frebis has the MTSU’s all-time record for most career starts with 59. He also ranks among the all-time leaders for innings, pitched, strikeouts and wins.

Jebavy, King and Wiel have until mid July to sign with a MLB club. If they don’t sign they will go to college.
