Former O’Gorman standout football player Josh Mahoney can now call himself a member of the University of Northern Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame.
Mahoney was recently named the inaugural recipient of the Merlin Taylor Academic Hall of Fame award. In 2009, Mahoney received the highest academic award the NCAA gives out, the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship Award. He was also a finalist for the Academic Heisman as a UNI senior (William V. Campbell Trophy), and was an academic all-American twice.
On the field, Mahoney played in 50 career games for the Panthers. He finished with 247 career tackles, leading UNI as a junior and senior, and was a two-time all-Missouri Valley honoree. At O’Gorman, Mahoney was a star two-way player and helped anchor the 2004 state championship team with 1,031 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.
Mahoney was selected as the Argus Leader Elite 45 Captain in 2004. His teammate, Dusty Coleman, won that distinction the next season in leading the Knights to another state football championship. Coleman was recently called up the Kansas City Royals.
