Jamon Meredith loves what he does for a living.

One thing the former University of South Carolina and current Tennessee Titan offensive lineman enjoys even more is teaching his craft.

“Early on I had a coach named Mike Pope,” said Meredith. “He always tried to get me to attend his camps. I always blew it off because I had other things to do. I wish I could go back and attend his camp.

“Now, I want to give kids the same opportunity that I didn’t take advantage of.”

Meredith, who will be competing in the National Football League for his seventh season, attended Hillcrest High School.

He entered South Carolina as a defensive end but was quickly moved to the offensive line where he became almost an immediate starter.

Hoping to one day return to the Upstate and become a high school coach, he hosting an offensive line camp at Hillcrest High school on Saturday. It begins at 8 a.m.

“Going into my seventh year in the NFL, I feel like coaching is my passion,” said Meredith. “In the NFL, sometimes I find myself coaching even some of the younger guys that are trying to take my spot.

“Coaching comes naturally to me. I think I have a lot to offer, especially on the high school level. I feel that is the best time to reach somebody, when they’re young. I’ve been working out with a few guys one-on-one and you see how eager they are to learn.”

The camp, which is for rising eighth graders and up, will last until noon. The cost is $25. Those interested can register at wyattacademy.com.

Meredith is a testament to putting talent with hard work as he did not begin to play high school football until late, but still earned a major college scholarship.

“Having it at my alma mater is really going to be nice,” said Meredith. “Even, after it’s over, I’m going to have a cookout so all of us can relax and have a good time.

“I think it is going to be a good showing. Kids will get to come out learn some stuff and compete.”

Meredith is only a few days away from attending the Titans training camp.

During last season he took advantage of the opportunity to return to Columbia to attend a 10-year reunion of the all the USC athletes who have played for Gamecocks football coach Steve Spurrier.

“It’s was great getting a chance to go down there and see my old teammates,” said Meredith. “It was a lot of fun. I wish they would do it every year.”
