The Yale Jr. Bulldogs wrestling club had a big weekend at the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association state tournament at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
Eight Yale wrestlers placed in the top eight at the tournament, with three bringing home state titles. In all, the Blue Water Area had 14 place winners and four state champions.
Winning titles for the Jr. Bulldogs were Kersten McClelland, Owen Youngblood and Brennan McClelland, while Donovan Pruitt of the Algonac Wrestling Club also claimed a state title.
Kersten McClelland won the 43-pound title in the 2007-06 (birth year) age group, defeating Alexander Rodriguez of Alma 11-9 in the final.
Youngblood won at 52 pounds in the 07-06 age group, defeating Dominic Gumtow of Warren Pride 4-3 in his finals match.
Brennan McClelland won the 65-pound title in the 03-02 age group, defeating Brendan Ferretti of Dakota Wrestling Club 5-4 in the finals.
Pruitt needed one win to claim the 55-pound title in the 03-02 age group, and he got it, defeating Carter Dettloff of Dakota Wrestling Club 6-5 in the weight class’ lone match.
Also placing at the tournament for Yale were Jeremy Griffith (sixth, 55 pounds, 05-04), James Rivers (third, 63 pounds, 05-04), Caleb Youngblood (fourth, 67 pounds, 05-04), David Watson (seventh, 95 pounds, 03-02) and Brendan Connelly (eighth, 90 pounds, 01-00).
Other Algonac placers were Jack Jewell (third, 145 pounds, 01-00), Chloe Fredericks (fourth, 110 pounds, girls 14-and-under) and Serina Veguilla (fourth, HWTA, girls 14-and-under).
Placing for Pioneers – Croswell-Lexington’s youth wrestling club – were Paul Scaramuzzino (second, 130 pounds, 01-00) and Vincent Scaramuzzino (fourth, 119 pounds, 03-02).
